Loose dentures are a common problem for people who are full or complete denture wearers, especially if you have worn them for a long time. Apart from looking unsightly, loose dentures can also make eating and talking difficult. Advances in dentistry have revolutionised the options available to replace multiple missing teeth and implant-supported dentures and bridges are leading the way.
Implant-supported dentures (Removable)
An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants. A regular denture rests on the gums, and is not supported by implants. An implant-supported denture is used when a person doesn’t have any teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants. An implant-supported denture has special attachments that fit onto attachments on the implants. The denture can “snap” into place to afford you more comfort, improved speech and restored chewing ability. The implants supporting the denture help stimulate your jaw and maintain bone structure. You will be able to remove the denture easily for cleaning.
A full bridge on implants (Fixed)
For people who don’t want to take their dentures out every day, non-removable (fixed) implant supported bridges may be an option. As an alternative to wearing a full removable denture (if there is adequate bone) multiple implants can be placed across the jawbone to provide support for a fixed bridge. The number of implants is determined by the specific requirements of each case but generally requires more implants than a removable implant denture. Your custom made bridge is screwed directly into the implants. The screw holes will be covered after insertion. Your bridge may be made from beautiful ceramic materials or acrylic (like a denture).
Your new teeth are firmly supported by the jaw, stimulating it and halting bone loss. The final result is a much more natural feeling set of new teeth.Your dentist will be able to remove the bridge when necessary for cleaning and maintenance.
Full mouth treatment
An entire mouth can be rebuilt using dental implants to support replacement teeth. The most natural results are achieved by using beautiful ceramic or acrylic bridges in conjunction with precise implant placement. Usually 6 – 8 implants on the upper and 4 – 6 on the lower are used to support an entire set of teeth and once the bridges have been screwed into place they look and feel just like real teeth.
